History

Dr. William Madison Boyd (1916–1956) was a brilliant teacher and a brave leader who worked tirelessly to make Atlanta a fairer place for everyone. Even though he lived during a time when segregation (the unfair system of keeping Black and white people separate) was the law, Dr. Boyd never gave up fighting for equality. He served as the powerful President of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) for the entire state of Georgia and was known as a fearless voice for change. As a professor at Atlanta University, he taught political science and mentored students, famously helping his student, Horace T. Ward, challenge the unfair laws that blocked Black students from entering major Georgia universities. Dr. Boyd also traveled across the state to encourage African American adults to register and use their right to vote, knowing this was key to changing unjust laws. Today, Dr. Boyd’s courage and dedication are still celebrated, especially at the William M. Boyd Elementary School in Atlanta, which is named in his honor, reminding every student to stand up for what is right and strive for equality.

William M. Boyd Elementary School is situated on the northwest side of Westside Reservoir Park, welcoming around 339 students from pre-kindergarten through 5th grade. Originally constructed in 1970 with open-plan classrooms, this 2-story, 80,240 sq. ft. addition and renovation project transformed the space by creating individual classrooms for Pre-K to 5th grades, enhancing focus and organization. The $10.5 million renovation also introduced secure classroom lockdown capabilities, ensuring a safe learning environment. The main entrance was thoughtfully updated with steps and a ramp to meet ADA standards, and an elevator was added near the courtyard and amphitheater area for improved accessibility. The project included upgrades to HVAC systems, site enhancements, lighting, and the installation of sprinklers as part of the Owner’s vision. To increase visibility and openness, the main entry and front façade were redesigned with expansive glass, including the relocation of the administration wing and renovation of the media center, creating a welcoming and transparent environment.
